The Origin Story
What The Shelly? didn’t start with a business plan. It started at my kitchen table, during a time when I needed something that was just for me.
As a caregiver, life can sometimes feel like it revolves around taking care of everyone and everything else. I found myself needing a way to quiet my mind, even if it was only for a little while. I’ve always loved the coast and creating things, so one day I started decoupaging shells.
There was something incredibly calming about it — sitting down, working with my hands, and turning a simple shell into something beautiful. For those moments, I could focus on the colors, the details, and the creativity in front of me instead of everything else that needed my attention.

It became my own little form of therapy.
I never sat down intending to start a business. I just kept creating. One shell became another, then another. I started experimenting with different designs and finding new ways to turn the natural beauty of the shore into pieces that were useful, giftable, and a little unexpected.
And somewhere along the way, What The Shelly? was born.
Today, what started as a creative escape has grown into a collection of handmade coastal pieces, DIY kits, workshops, parties, and experiences that allow me to share that same feeling of creativity with other people.
Every piece I make still carries a little bit of where this all began. Many of my creations start with real shells, which means no two will ever be exactly alike — and I think there’s something beautiful about that.
This business has taught me that sometimes the things we turn to when we need a little peace can lead us somewhere we never expected.
For me, it started with a shell.

So… why What The Shelly?
Like most good things, the name started at home. My family is always part of my brainstorming process (and yes—they definitely don’t hold back on opinions). One day, my teenage daughter Bella threw out “What The Shelly?” and it instantly stuck.
It felt like me—fun, a little silly, and not taking life too seriously—while still being creative and memorable.⸻
